Suficientes bichos para pasar un rato.

Solo he hecho un poco de A/B entre el DAC del Compass2 (WM8741) y el JDS Odac. Como era de esperar el Compass es algo mas fluido y calido pero muy muy detallado también. El Jds Odac es comparativamente mas seco, más tecnico más frio y más "thin" como dicen los anglosajones. El WM8741 tiene más chicha y más cuerpo, más sustancia.


En cuanto a amplificación el Matrix colorea un poco en comparación con el Compass2. Vamos que la combinación de los dos elementos es interesante.

Existen 7 o 9 filtros (jumpers) para modificar levemente el DAC. Evidentemente aun no he abierto el Compass2 y ya veré si me animo...Un "ahora" amigo de Headfi de Dinamarca me ha literalmente inundado de iinformación técnica y sugerencias en cuanto al setup. Que poco sé cuando leo a esto piraos!

Las primeras impresiones con el COmpass2 son perfectas. Pero me faltan "299" horas de burn-in.

El aparato es bonito. Esta impecablemente acabado sin ser de lujo.

Como me pasó a mi, el M-Stage se ve pequeño al lado de este monstruo  :jejeje:.

Los acabados de Audio GD son muy buenos, pero tienen ese toque artesanal (ya verás cuando lo abras....) que no tiene el Matrix.

En cuanto a neutralidad, si es parecido a mi NFB-28, es de lo mas neutro que he podido probar.

Hola a todos

os dejo aquí algunas fotos tras haber abierto el compass2. Me parece una maravilla de aparato... y por dentro tiene ese look retro artesanal pero de calidad increible.



El acabado es muy bueno. Los botones eficaces y robustos. El mando del volumen una delicia de suavidad y "peso".



Entrada USB (aun no me he comprado el Van den  Hul de 250 GBP)... coaxial, y óptica

Entrada analógica RCA y salida DAC analógica.

Y apesar del cable USB de serie que manda Audio GD... esto suena MUY bien...

Ala... buenas noches...que estoy ocupado con los filter settings ....esos jumpers que si dan minimum phase, linear phase, apodising filter, soft knee filter or brickwall filter... a ver si me entero de algo!!!

Pués ayer por la noche hice pruebas hasta las tantas, escogí la posición de filtros siguiente:

8X oversampling , Linear phase apodising filter, Low rate OSR (no me digais que dicho así no suena de p... m...!!!)

Ni idea técnicamente lo que quiere decir pero es la que me suena mejor. Sonido más limpio, más transparente, más aireado y también más profundo en frecuencias bajas aunque no lo más rápido.

Para los que les guste y entiendan os paso dos cosas:

1. La hoja de Audio GD donde se explica gráficamente los diferentes filtros

2. Una nota de un "amigo" danés que se lo ha currado e intenta explicarme a modo de tutorial los diferentes filtros. Le estoy muy agradecido aunque no entienda gran cosa. Si alguien se anima a explicarmelo a lenguaje llano, estaré encantado. No es un problema de idioma entiéndase. ..sino técnico.  Lo del sampling rate esta claro y más lo que viene después y si alguien entiende lo de linear phase,  apodising, soft knee...entiendo que son nombres que se les da a ciero tipo de filtros pero como se traducen en percepción acústica.  Yo solo puede apreciar con archivos flac "normales" y por probar con Spotify premium a 320 kbps y ese como me sono mejor con los Etymotic Er4pt y los K601.

Below here is what I believe is a useful guide to using the wm8741 with the Compass.

Before setting the jumpers you must know or set the sampling rate of your source.

PCM MODE SAMPLING RATES

The WM8741 supports master clock rates of 128fs to 768fs, where fs is the audio sampling frequency (LRCLK), typically 32kHz, 44.1kHz, 48kHz, 88.2kHz, 96kHz, 176.4kHz or 192kHz.

The WM8741 has a master clock detection circuit that automatically determines the relationship between the master clock frequency and the sampling rate.

The master clock should be synchronised with LRCLK(sampling frequency), although the WM8741 is tolerant of phase differences or jitter on this clock.

See table 11 page 24-25 in the data sheet.

This means that in order to stay within these limits of the master clock the wm8741 supports:

Low rate OSR (32/44.1/48kHz) with 8 x oversampling

Medium rate OSR (88.2/96kHz) with 4 x oversampling

High rate OSR (176.4/192kHz) with 2 x oversampling

Within each of these sampling groups, the low- medium- and high sampling rate, the wm8741 offers the following digital filters:

The WM8741 includes a wide range of digital filters. A limited set of these can be selected in hardware control mode as listed in Table 50, page 42 in the data sheet:

Misc information:


It is recommended that the device is muted before the filter response is changed to prevent noise as the filters are reset from appearing on the outputs.

I believe this means you do not have to turn the power off when switching the jumpers, you only need to mute the device. (Press the HP/DAC button if the Compass is used as a DAC/AMP)


With this knowledge we are now ready to set the jumpers in the Compass.

First determine or choose the sampling rate on your playing device and set the OS jumper to correspond.
Then choose 1 of the 3 possible filter responses.

This should be it.

Again I am really glad you asked the questions you did.

Still there is one issue, but nothing really important. Notice how the table 50 above suddenly lists with 0, 1 and then Z

instead of 0, Z and 1, which is the order they have used everywhere else in the data sheet.

0 is position one with a jumper, Z is no jumper and 1 is position two for the jumper. Z gives you response 4 with low sampling rate and response 4

is the linear phase apodising filter. This does not correspond with the audio-gd manual, it states that no jumper is the minimum phase apodising filter.

Still this is a small issue. Maybe it is a misprint in the data sheet, maybe not, it doesn't really matter to me which filter it actually is, as long as it is one of the

three filters available with the sampling rate.

I have listened a lot to the different filters, all of them, but I always came back to a few filters that I thought sounded better than the others.

Thank goodness my favorite filters was actually always among the right ones according to the sampling rate I use and all the above...

my hearing is good enough to determine that much at least ;-)
